THE USE OF VISUAL AIDS IN ENGLISH TEACHING AT SMPN 2 BUDURAN SIDOARJO

Media are tools or the physical things used by teachers to facilitate the instruction. To select the appropriate media, they should have a broad knowledge of the good characteristics of the media in order to show the teacher’s professionalism in English teaching learning. Many problems have occurred toward the use of visual aids. Sometimes visual aids were too small or hard to see or they failed to serve the intended purpose. The problem is they were too complicated. Because if the teachers give out a handout that has complicated visual aid, the students will scrutinize the document and try to understand the visual aid rather than the material. Based on this phenomenon, the teacher ought to make effort to create visual aids as high quality as possible because they do not only used as teaching media to ease the students to understand the material, but also to avoid the problems in teaching.





In this case, the researcher observes the classroom situation and condition to know the implementation of wallcharts as the visual aids in English teaching, the problems in the use of visual aids and also their solution about the problems in the use of visual aids in English teaching at SMPN 2 Buduran Sidoarjo.





This study principally uses descriptive qualitative research. This study involves the researcher as the observer and the English teachers as the teacher. The instruments used in this study are observation, questionnaire, and interview. In this research, the writer used qualitative data from the observation and interview result and also quantitative data from the questionnaire result. The data results are analyzed descriptively and the findings are described in descriptive way.





Based on the analysis result finding by each instrument, the researcher found some points. She concluded that the use of visual aids are implemented well in English teaching based on the technique and materials even thought a few problems are still found. Next, the problems found are: the wall charts were too small and hard to see, the students were lack motivated to learn English and the wall charts were looked like an elementary school’s media. From these problems, the teachers took many solutions. They made the wall charts bigger, simple, clear, not spending much time and much money. Besides, they made a classified wall charts, they created colorful and attractive one and they also prepared them before hang up. Furthermore, they tried to make a better, creative and appropriate wall charts to ease the students’ understandings to deliver the given materials.
