Mastering English well is always related to how someone can master some language
skills (included speaking, writing, reading and listening), which are developed from
language components especially vocabulary. However, sometimes the students get
difficulties in learning vocabulary, or they are not interested in the learning process
because of less variety in teaching method and motivation from the teacher.
In this research, the researcher tried to prove theory that the application of board work
activities can enrich the students’ vocabulary and she wanted to know the students’
vocabulary improvement after board work acivities were applied. Therefore, the
researcher determined to conduct the research entitled enriching students’ vocabulary
through board work activities at MTs Fatahillah Simongagrok Dawarblandong
Mojokerto.
This paper is a report of a classroom action research conducted in vocabulary class at
the eighth graders. After finding the existing the teaching learning process in the
vocabulary class was not quite interesting and motivating to the students, the new
teaching aids were designed to motivate the students in learning and enriching
vocabulary. Some interesting activities offered help the students to create a fun and
interesting atmosphere in the class so that the students’ boredom can be avoided. The
plan consists of some topics namely: offers and requests, biographical recount about
two successful singers, and my village.
Board work activities were applied as a warmer and filler during the class. From the
observation checklist, the students’ participation checklist, the field note and the
questionnaire, the students could learn English especially vocabulary easily. They
could identify some parts of speech including noun, verb, and adjective. They were
also enthusiastic in learning vocabulary during the application of board work
activities. In addition, according to the result of postest from the first cycle to the
third cycle, there were significant improvements of the students’ vocabulary score.
Finally, it is expected to give useful contribution to the teacher and the students in
English teaching and learning process. In addition, this study is expected to help the
other further researchers as references if they want to conduct wider investigation in
the same field
