PAST TENSE

Kegunaan (function) :

Use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past. Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the specific time, but they do have one specific time in mind atau past tense digunakan untuk menyatakan sesuatu yang terjadi atau dilakukan diwaktu lampau.

Kata keterangan waktu yang biasa digunakan dalam tense ini adalah :

- Yesterday

- The day before yesterday

- Just now

- Last night

- Last week

- Last month

- Two days ago

- Four month ago

- Five years ago

Past tense has two kind of sentences

Verbal

(+) S + V2 + Object

(- ) S + Did not + V1 + Object

(?) Did + S + V1 + Object ?

Example :

(+) You went to surabaya yesterday

(- ) You did not go to surabaya yesterday

(?) Did you go to Surabaya yesterday?

(+) Mrs.Kartono visited the musium

(-) Mrs Kartono did not visit the museum

(?) Did Mrs.Kartono visit the museum?

Non – Verbal

(+) S + was / were + Complement

(- ) S + was / were + not + Complement

(?) Was / Were + S + Complement ?

Example :

(+) I was sick yesterday

(- ) I was not sick yesterday

(?) Was i sick yesterday?

Task 1

Once there was a little boy who was going for a walk along a bush track near a creek. He stopped by a rock to watch some tadpoles in the creek. As he leant over he fell in with a splash. Luckily his older sister had followed him. She heard the splash and ran to the edge and was able to rescue him.

Task 2

Our Trip To The Blue Mountains

On Friday we went to the Blue Mountains. We stayed at David and Delia’s house. It has a big garden with lots of colorful flowers and a tennis court.

On Saturday we saw the Three Sisters and went on the scenic railway. It was scary. Then Mummy and I went shopping with Delia. We went to some antique shops and I tried on

some old hats.

On Sunday we went on the Scenic Skyway and it rocked. We saw cockatoos having a shower. In the afternoon we went home.

Past continuous

Tenses ini digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu peristiwa atau perbuatan yang sedang terjadi di waktu lampau.

Time signal

- at this time yesterday

- at the same time last week

- at 07.00 o’clock last night

- ………. When + past tense

Pattern:

+) S + was/were + Ving + O

-) S + was/were + not + Ving + O

?) Was/were + s + Ving + O ?

Example

I was watching tv at 8 p.m last night

I was not watching tv at 8 p.m last night

Was I watching tv at 8 p.m last night ?
